2013 was a great year for Hollywood with some incredibly good films making it to the theatres right at the end. As the Oscar fever heats up let me put down my choices on the main categories.
BEST PICTURE:
Though we have some worthy names on the list. Gravity wins this hands down for the sheer visual brilliance. This one deserves the big prize just for Alfonso Cuaron’s grand vision. I agree it’s shabbily written but it’s a worthy tribute to 2001 – A Space Odyssey which for me will be my all time favourite space movie.
BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE:
This one irks me simply because the Best Actor of the year isn’t on the list. Yeah you heard me right. The award should ideally go to Tom Hanks for his double duty in Captain Philips and Saving Mr. Banks unfortunately the Academy thinks otherwise. Among nominated those it’s neck and neck between Leonardo Di Caprio and Matthew McConaughey both doing stunning work in The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club. But I guess the scales are tipped slightly in favor of the latter considering the fact the Academy hasn’t always been kind to Hollywood’s Eternal Chocolate boy.
BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE:
Cate Blanchett owns this one without a shadow of doubt. Seldom has fall from grace been so wonderfully depicted. She breathes life into a complex character giving shape to one of Woody Allen’s best films since Annie Hall. PS: Another Oscar Nomination for the acting machine – Meryl Streep – proud to be a fan.
BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE:
This one’s a toughie-My pick – Jared Leto for the wonderful transformation both physically and mentally in Dallas Buyers Club. Dark horse – Barkhad Abdi as the Somalian Pirate in Captain Philips
BEST ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE:
It’s got to be Sally Hawkins for her amazing work in Blue Jasmine but the Academy might just go in for the popular choice.Lupita Nyong’o portrayal in 12 years a slave.
BEST DIRECTOR:
My choice – Alfonso Cuaron again for giving us an enthralling ride to space
BEST ANIMATED FILM:
This one’s a steal. Frozen has swept everyone off their feet like a pretty lady with it’s enchanting visuals, tone, songs, and heart and is mostly likely to pick up the Oscar Statuette.
